Where Hyde Park actually is, because Google gets this wrong

Hyde Park is the southernmost neighbourhood of the City of Boston, zip code 02136. It is a full Boston neighbourhood, not a separate town and not a suburb - you are inside the city line, paying city rates, with a Boston address.

It is worth saying plainly because search engines confuse it constantly. Type "Ellis Street Boston" into a map and you are often sent to Dorchester, 02121, which is a different neighbourhood five miles north. If you are coming to us, the address is 17 or 19 Ellis Street, Hyde Park, Boston, MA 02136. Put the zip in your sat-nav and it will take you to the right door.

What Hyde Park gives you is space. The houses have driveways and yards, the streets are quiet at night, and an apartment here is larger than the same money buys closer in.

The commuter rail, and why it changes the arithmetic

This is the part that surprises people. Hyde Park is on the commuter rail, and our guests walk to it.

Rishith, who stayed at 19 Ellis in July, put it better than we would: "Clean place within walking distance of the commuter rail with easy access to the station." The train runs into South Station, which puts you in the financial district, on the Red Line and a short walk from the waterfront.

That matters because it removes the usual trade-off. Normally you either stay downtown and pay for a garage, or stay out and drive in and pay for a garage anyway. Here you can leave the car in the driveway all week and take the train.

If you are driving, it is roughly 25 to 30 minutes into downtown outside rush hour, and about 25 minutes to Logan Airport.

Nine apartments on one street

Both buildings sit on Ellis Street, a few doors apart. That is unusual and it is the reason larger groups end up here: when one apartment is not big enough, the next one is not across the city, it is next door.

Every apartment is the whole apartment - your own front door, your own kitchen, your own bathroom. None of them is a room in someone's house.

The parking, and what it replaces

There is a driveway and you park in it. No visitor permit, no resident sticker, no app, no garage, no circling the block at eleven at night.

Angus, who stayed at 19 Ellis in June: "The parking at the rear was a real bonus."

This is worth putting a number on, because it is the single largest hidden cost of staying in central Boston. A downtown garage runs a meaningful sum per night on top of the room, every night, and a hotel that advertises parking usually means paid parking. Over a week that is a real line on the bill, and here it is simply not on it.

It is also why people with a car and a reason to drive - a golf trip, a college tour, a stadium weekend - tend to end up out here rather than downtown.

What Hyde Park is genuinely good for

Golf, first, because it is the one people do not expect. George Wright Golf Course is in Hyde Park - a municipal Donald Ross course, and one of the best public courses in the city. Ryan, who stayed at 17 Ellis in June: "Location was perfect for golfing outside the city while still being able to easily access downtown."

College tours. Tre' stayed at 17 Ellis for exactly that and described it as "10 minutes from the college, and a good, less-pricey option in the area for a quick stay."

Gillette Stadium, roughly 30 minutes, because Hyde Park is already on the south side of the city with a clean run down - our Gillette guide has the detail.

Visiting family. A great many Boston families live in Hyde Park, Mattapan and Milton. If yours does, you are minutes away with your own front door - more on that here.

What it is not good for, so you can rule us out

If your trip is two nights and everything you want to see is on the Freedom Trail, stay downtown. You will spend your time travelling, and a hotel room you can walk out of into Faneuil Hall is the better answer. We would rather tell you that now than have you find out on the first morning.

Hyde Park earns its place on longer stays, on stays with a car, and on stays with enough people that a hotel would mean two or three rooms. On a one-night sightseeing trip for two, it does not.

If you want to be closer in, our Dorchester apartments are 15 to 20 minutes from downtown and sit on the Red Line - see where to stay in Boston.

Common questions

Is Hyde Park actually part of Boston?
Yes. Hyde Park is the southernmost neighbourhood of the City of Boston, zip code 02136, annexed in 1912. It is a Boston address, not a suburb.
Can I get into the city without a car?
Yes - the commuter rail runs from Hyde Park into South Station, and our guests walk to the station. From South Station you are on the Red Line and in the financial district.
Is the parking really free?
Yes, in the driveway at the building, for every night of your stay. No permit, no daily rate, and no need to move the car for street cleaning.
How many people can you sleep on Ellis Street?
Up to 29 across the five apartments at 19 Ellis and up to 25 across the four at 17 Ellis. Individual apartments sleep 4 to 7, and because the buildings are a few doors apart, a large group can book several and still be together.
How far is it to downtown Boston and Logan Airport?
Roughly 25 to 30 minutes to downtown by car outside rush hour, and about 25 minutes to Logan. The commuter rail into South Station is the alternative if you would rather leave the car at the apartment.
